If You Play Golf

Written by Bill Clennan with thanks and apologies to Rudyard Kipling

If you can trust your swing

When all about you are losing balls & blaming it on you.

If you can bare to see the shots you’ve taken

Twisted by spin go in a trap or two.

If you can have a streak of one putt birdies

Shattered by an 8, or 9, or 10.

Or have a perfect shot bounce off the fairway

And never, ever see that ball again

If you can make a heap of all your winnings

And risk it on the 18th hole, and loose

And start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss.

If you can meet with triumph & Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same.

If neither playing partner nor foe can hurt you,

Or being cheated not give way to cheating.

If you play with beginners or professionals,

And never loose the common touch.

If you can love Fuzzy Zoeler and Tiger Woods

And never mention fried chicken too much.

If you wait and not get tired of waiting,

Or allow and irksome foursome to play through.

If you want to make a putt, to win the match, and miss,

And yet, not let it trouble you.

If you can fill your absolute worst round!

With 18 holes of satisfying fun.

Then the world is yours, and everything that’s in it

And what more you’ll be a Golfer my son!
